Scripture:

John 20:27

Sunday readings, Bible.male holding Bible with nature view

Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and look at my hands. Put your hand into the wound in my side. Don’t be faithless any longer. Believe!”

Touch and Feel the Scars of Risen Christ

Jesus, after His resurrection, showed his disciples His scars so that they would see and believe that he did not resurrect merely as a spirit. He rose again physically, in bodily form. Jesus invited Thomas to not only see his scars, but to also touch and feel the scars so that he would be convinced of Christ’s physical resurrection.

The scars remain to remind us of the excruciating pain Christ endured on the cross. He was whipped, scourged, beaten, bruised, nailed, and finally to crucifixion.

I think this verse helps us to understand how to deal with scars in our lives. When have I grown the most in my character? It was when I had cuts, scrapes, and bruises. If God were to remove all of these situations from me, I would not be able to grow in God.

He wants to build my character, so instead of taking away all of the tough situations in my life, He promises to give me the edge to overcome these barriers and walk with me through all of my struggles, shaping my character. I believe this is what it means to touch and feel the scars of Jesus, just as Thomas did. We too can bring our wounds to the Cross, allowing Jesus to bring healing.

I bear numerous internal scars that remain hidden from the eyes of others. Growing in character hasn’t always been easy, but I have tried consistently to turn to Jesus. I also have a visible scar that I am proud of – my c-section scar from delivering both my babies. I am not ashamed or afraid of having scars. I believe having my babies was much worth it, even if it meant having scars. The scars of Risen Christ were not concealed. The scars reveal true love. The scars on his body are the scars of redemption.

Looking ahead, we anticipate meeting Jesus in heaven, recognizing Him not by Earthly images but by the scars on His hands, feet, and side. “Blessed those who have not seen and yet have believed.” John 20:29b. Bless my sisters and brothers for all who, today, not only see but also to touch and feel the scars of our risen Christ.

Reflection Written by Joohee Lee

Prayer:

Dear Lord, help us bring our wounds to the Cross, finding healing and redemption. Grant us strength to grow through struggles, cherishing scars as symbols of love. May we recognize You by Your scars in heaven. Bless those who see and feel the scars of our risen Savior.

In Jesus's name, we pray, Amen.

Please take a moment to consider what God is speaking to you through the scripture passage and the devotional reflection.
