Day 15

Cross Keys United Methodist Church

www.crosskeyschurch.org

Scripture:

Luke 12:35-40 (NIV)

Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, 36 like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. 37 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them.

38 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the middle of the night or toward daybreak. 39 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. 40 You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

Reflection

It’s been about 2000 years since Jesus said these words and He is yet to come again. We are likely to become complacent, less aware and less watchful. I have a friend who has a bad habit of not locking his front door when he goes out because there have been no break-ins in his neighborhood. I’m fairly certain you would advise him to lock it no matter what.

How do you think he would feel if he came back and found he had been robbed? Angry, violated, scared, and maybe kicking himself that he didn’t do all he could to stop it.

I had arranged a ride to the airport with a limo service. They were due to pick me up at 10. It was approaching 10:30 and there was still no sign of them. I was becoming anxious that I would miss my flight.

I paced back and forth at the front door, my coat on and ready to run out the door the moment they arrived. I didn’t do anything to distract me from watching. I believe this is how we are meant to be waiting for Jesus’ second coming.

Jesus is coming again, and He will gather His own to His throne. Be watching and waiting with your coat on and your bags packed.

Reflection Written by Julie Guentherr

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, help us to be ever watchful and faithful as we await Your son’s second coming. Empower us with your Holy Spirit to be living, breathing examples of Christ to the world around us. Enable us to love and forgive others as Jesus would. In the name of Jesus, our savior, and through the power of the Holy Spirit

In Jesus's name, we pray, Amen.

Please take a moment to consider what God is speaking to you through the scripture passage and the devotional reflection.

Then, take some time for prayer—pray for your own soul, and lift up the upcoming presidential election in the fall.
