Day 8

Scripture:

John 16:33(NIV)

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.

Reflection:

In this verse from the book of John, Jesus offers not only a message of comfort, but of courage. The setting for these words is the upper room, in which Jesus is preparing his disciples for his imminent arrest and crucifixion. But he is also preparing the disciples for living with persecution, contempt, and suspicion among a world that does not know Jesus and his word.

Similarly, we face troubles in our lives as Christians, albeit not in the same way that the disciples did. We still have moments of doubt or fear where Jesus’ good news feels distant. Jesus knew that after his arrest the disciples would flee in fear, and even Peter would deny him, but because they had faith in God’s plan they would ultimately be comforted. We also find peace despite our falters because Jesus paid the ultimate price.

In the Lenten season while we make a conscious effort to consider God’s word every day, let us also consider in all our experiences that Jesus has already “overcome the world.” Since our savior has won the ultimate victory, we can be at peace despite worldly challenges. A powerful aspect of this scripture is Jesus’ point to add “take heart,” meaning to be courageous in this peace.

Jesus has already equipped us with not only security through his sacrifice but has empowered us to be brave Christians that can handle what the world throws our way.

Reflection Written by Amber Bertino

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for the steadfast comfort you provide. Please help us to remember that you are always by our side, and that when our hearts are tested, we can be courageous because Jesus has already “overcome the world,” and thus overcome our trials as well.

In Jesus's name, we pray, Amen.

Please take a moment to consider what God is speaking to you through the scripture passage and the devotional reflection.

Then, take some time for prayer—pray for your own soul, and lift up Joohee and Eugenie who are traveling to Korea tonight. May God guide them

for a safe trip to see their family!

You can also listen to the music provided below as a backdrop
