Day 14

Cross Keys United Methodist Church

www.crosskeyschurch.org

Scripture:

Luke 23:34 (NIV)

Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.

Scripture:

Matthew 18:21-22 (NIV)

Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.

Forgiveness

As I thought about these verses, it occurred to me how many times we all get our feelings hurt because of something someone has said and done to us. I am sure that everyone knows someone who hasn't spoken to a relative for years. Yes, it can be hard to forgive, but Jesus commands us to do just that.

Jesus was nailed to the cross, in pain and dying for the sins of the world and yet he asked God to forgive the very people who were doing this to him. Almost all of us have memorized the Lord's prayer. But have you really thought about the words "Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us”?

We all need to ask God to help us give forgiveness to others just as he has forgiven us, and also to ask God to forgive us for taking so long to follow this commandment.

Reflection Written by Lillian Stuhltrager

Prayer:

God of Love, forgive us, Lord, for the times when we have held onto grudges and withheld forgiveness from others. May Your Spirit guide us in embodying the love and mercy of Christ, and may we strive to forgive as we have been forgiven.

In Jesus's name, we pray, Amen.

Please take a moment to consider what God is speaking to you through the scripture passage and the devotional reflection.

Then, take some time for prayer—pray for your own soul, and lift up people living in conflict and war situations. May God’s peace be with them!

You can also listen to the music provided below as a backdrop

for your time of prayer.
