Scripture:

John 1:1-4 (NIV)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning.

3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.

From Beginning to End

Recently, I had the privilege of officiating a funeral service for a beloved lady who graced this earth for more than 101 years. On the very same day, I found myself hosting a birthday party for my daughter, celebrating her turning 7. It was a deeply emotional experience, as I navigated the bittersweet moment of bidding farewell to a precious soul while simultaneously rejoicing in the blossoming life of my daughter. This profound moment served as a humbling reminder that both beginnings and endings belong to our Lord God, who is the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer of our lives.

The Gospel of John 1:1-4 echoes this truth, proclaiming the divine nature of Jesus Christ, who was with God and was God. It declares that "All things were made through Him; without Him, nothing was made" (v.3). As we embark on our Lenten journey this Ash Wednesday, I extend an invitation to join in the Ash Wednesday service this evening. Through the symbolic act of receiving ashes, we are reminded of the profound truth captured in Genesis 3:19: "For dust you are and to dust you shall return." This sobering reminder serves not to alarm us, but rather to draw us into remembrance that we belong to God, who is the Alpha and Omega (Revelation 22:13).

As we embark on this Lenten journey, let us remember that Jesus Christ is the light of all mankind and the Emmanuel God, who not only breathed life into our bodies but also walks alongside us throughout our life journey. Amen.

Reflection Written by Rev. Sean Lee

Prayer:

Dear God, As we begin this Lenten journey, we lift our hearts in prayer, acknowledging Jesus Christ as the light of all mankind and our constant companion along life's path. Thank you for breathing the very first breath into our bodies and for walking with us every step of the way.

May your presence guide us, your love sustain us, and your light illuminate our path as we journey through this season of reflection and renewal.

In Jesus's name, we pray, Amen.

Please take a moment to consider what God is speaking to you through the scripture passage and the devotional reflection.

Then, spend some time in prayer—pray for your own soul, and lift up your pastor and their family in prayer as well.
