Day 2
Cross Keys United Methodist Church
Scripture:
Luke 15:31-32
31 And also to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours.
32 It was right that we should make merry and be glad, for your brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found.’
Reflection:
The parable of The Prodigal Son for me is the most complete summation of the Gospel message of grace and the human condition. The younger son represents our propensity to rebel against light and chase darkness; to the point of putting ourselves in such a hole that even what the pigs have is more desirable than the hell that following our own selfish desires puts us in. When the son finally recognizes what he has done and turns to his loving Father, his Father runs to greet him with great joy and celebration, not anger and judgment for his waste of the Father’s gifts and love.
The older son is a great representation of our tendency to get caught up in our own righteousness, jealousy, and condemnation of others. We thirst for a worldly justice that prevents us from recognizing and enjoying the gifts that God gives us in the present and prevents us from rejoicing in the unending grace that the Father so freely gives to all his children.
Reflection Written by Anthony Bertino
Prayer:
Heavenly Father please forgive me when I choose darkness over your light and ego over humility. Please let me recognize your gifts, love, and unending grace.
In Jesus's name, we pray, Amen.
Please take a moment to consider what God is speaking to you through the scripture passage and the devotional reflection.
Then, spend some time in prayer—pray for your own soul, and lift up our sisters and brothers in the prayer list.
You can also listen to the music provided below as a backdrop
for your time of prayer.
